Self-Portrait as a Creature

These incredible creatures are the result of creative self-exploration and problem-solving. The students began by choosing three animals that are like them in peronality, behavior or appearance. Then, they sketched out a creature that combined parts from all three animals. The results were a sort of metaphorical self-portrait - the student represented in the form of a new animal. Each creature is as unique as the student who created it!

The Fourth Grade Art Gala Opening Reception

The Fourth Grade Art Gala is a one-of-a-kind fine arts event that happens each year at Briargrove. The students work on breath-taking musical compositions with Mr. Nave - singing, playing instruments, and writing their own special parts for songs. The music program is followed by an art opening and reception, with music, cookies and punch to make it just like an opening at a professional art gallery. Every fourth grader had at least two works of art in the show - that means at least 250 original masterpieces on display in the hallyway! It's a lot of work - for the students and the teachers! Many students spent lunch and recess in Mrs. Gonzalez's room, eagerly working to finish their sculptures in time. At the reception, everyone finally got to relax and reap the benefits of all our hard work!

We had an excellent turn-out at this year's Gala.

The walls of Briargrove were FULL of beautiful art.

Hanging the show was like playing a game of Tetris!

We had tables of sculptures set up all over the hallway.

The diversity of our students was reflected in the incredible variety of their work.

They had a great time showing off their work at the Art Gala reception!
The fourth graders were so excited to show their families the art they had worked so hard on.
Visitors of the Gala looked at group sculptures made by the fourth grade, and learned more about the self-portrait and creature units.

Mr. Nave and Mrs. Gonzalez enjoyed visiting with their talented students during the reception.

Former Briargrove teacher Ms. Patterson (now Mrs. Kinison!) came out to support the Briargrove artists.

The Singhoff family were excellent helpers as we put out the sculptures! Big thanks also to the Barnett family! Lynn Singhoff and Shelly Barnett were our wonderful PTO helpers this year.

Mr. and Mrs. Weymouth (Mrs. Gonzalez's parents) helped all week to get the show ready. What a great family!
Mr. Gonzalez helped to cut the amazing mats for the portrait series. He was so impressed with Mr. Nave's music program, as well!
Everyone had a great time! Can't wait until next year! Briargrove students, teachers, and families - we couldn't have done it without you!!!
